FAQs

How does Doorothy work?

Doorothy replaces your existing interior door handle with a smart handle that retracts the latch bolt automatically. A compact swing unit then gently opens the door for you.

Will Doorothy work if my door has a deadbolt?

Doorothy is designed for interior doors without deadbolts.
If the deadbolt is locked, the door cannot open even if the latch is retracted. For doors with a deadbolt, we recommend leaving the deadbolt disengaged.

Can I still turn the handle manually?

Yes. The handle is always manually operable.
You can turn it just like a normal door handle at any time—before, during, or after automatic opening.

Does Doorothy require wiring?

No. Doorothy is 100% wireless. Both the smart handle and the swing unit run on internal batteries. There is no drilling, no hardwiring, and no electrician needed.

How long does the battery last?

Depending on usage, the battery typically lasts 6-8 months on a single charge. Light-use environments may far exceed this. You’ll receive clear low-battery alerts before it needs recharging.

What happens if the power or battery dies?

If the battery runs out, your door still works like a normal door.
You can turn the handle manually and open/close the door without any problem.

Do I need to modify my door or frame?

No permanent modifications are required.
Doorothy mounts directly onto your door using the existing handle hole and a removable adhesive mounting system for the swing unit. Everything is renter-friendly and fully reversible. For users who prefer a more traditional setup, we also provide optional screws for a permanent installation.

Can Doorothy open heavy or sticky doors?

Yes. Doorothy’s motor is designed to handle most residential interior doors.
If your door requires excessive force to open manually, we recommend adjusting the hinges for optimal performance.

Does Doorothy require Wi-Fi?

No. Doorothy works offline.
